Professor Sabelo Mhlanga is a Research Professor and Deputy Director at the Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability Research Unit (NanoWS), College of Science, Engineering and Technology, University of South Africa, South Africa since Jan 2015. He is the National Contact Point (NCP) for EC Horizon 2020 Nanotechnology projects in South Africa, Chairperson of the South African Chemical Institute (SACI) Central Section, and Editor for Water SA and the Journal of Membrane Science and Research (JMSR). He has published about 60 publications including reviews, 6 book chapters, 2 technical reports, a solar-driven membrane prototype and 10 conference proceedings in international peer reviewed journals. He has trained and supervised masters (12), doctoral (5) and post-doctoral (5) fellows in the area of nanomaterials chemistry and water research, who have graduated or completed their research since 2010. He continues to supervise many other postgraduate students. He has presented in work various international conferences as an invited speaker and he has received numerous awards. Prof Mhlanga’s research interest includes green/sustainable chemistry, nanotechnology (nanocomposites and membranes) applied in drinking water and wastewater treatment. The research is done with within the context of the water-energy-food nexus. He has keen interest in developing energy efficient technologies for drinking water treatment in rural communities and he recently completed flagship projects supported by the National Research Foundation (South Africa) and the Water Research Commission of South Africa.
